Things People Get Wrong About Office Ergonomics
As we spend more time sitting around in our everyday lives, it’s crucial that we do so in a way that ensures comfort in every aspect of our lives. Public awareness around having an ergonomic office space is increasing, with the rise of products such as computer stands aimed at avoiding fatigue. However, not all products out there will achieve that goal. Some of them might do little to help your posture and overall work setup, either doing nothing at all or making it worse. I’m here to walk you through the common mistakes people make when getting equipment for their home office.
Ergonomics: What is it?
The most common definition of ergonomics is the study of people in their work environment, with the intention of modifying the work environment to the work to avoid any injury. Even though this definition applies to work, make no mistake in thinking the only application is for your workspace. It can apply to multiple aspects of your life like your hobbies or school! The idea is to make the repetitive actions in your everyday life put less stress on your body.
Two Things That Do Not Improve Your Work Setup
Yoga balls
Yoga balls are not an effective way to ensure you have proper posture and using one forces your body to be constantly engaged. It is proven that we are not good at multitasking, so you are not doing yourself any favors by using one. Yoga balls have been proven to not do much for correcting posture and actually increase discomfort. Just leave the yoga balls for exercise instead.
2. Using a standing desk without proper modifications and awareness
Although a standing desk does allow you to get away from the pesky office chair and stretch your body, you will inevitably run into the same problems you would have using a sitting desk if you aren't mindful. Over time, you can develop poor posture and put strain on your body if you aren’t being conscious about it. It’s better to change positions regularly (every 30 mins to an hour) so your body gets a chance to reset its position. Without a foam pad, a standing desk can quickly make your feet sore after a long day.
